Chapter 1 begins with a preview of the book, telling us how the legend of the Cherokee Warrior will become real for the narrator, Lee Dunham. After sharing his thoughts on death, Lee explains that his face is the face of death to a small village of Vietnamese people in the Vietnam War-because he has been ordered to kill them by his commanding officer. He refuses, even after that officer threatens to shoot Lee if he doesn’t shoot the villagers. We hear a shot ring out, with people screaming, and Lee describing its aftermath. Lee asks himself how he ever came to this point in his life. Then Lee recalls his home town, his beginnings, the death of his mother, and how he was drafted into the army the day after her funeral.
